History: Dispatch From Disney's 1943 ![]() Here is the first in a series of posts on a pamphlet that was part of the Clair Weeks collection. Titled "Dispatch From Disney's", this 1943 publication was distributed to Disney employees who were serving in the war effort. The first section includes an introduction by Walt, an article on the power of animation to educate by Major Alexander P. de Seversky (author of Victory Through Air Power), a cartoon feature by Roy Williams, and newsy info on Disney artists T. Hee, Freddie Moore, Frank Thomas and Woolie Reitherman. I'll post more from this fascinating booklet soon. Comics: Harvey Kurtzman's Comic Books ![]() You probably know Harvey Kurtzman from his work on Mad Magazine, or from the Little Annie Fannie feature he did with Will Elder and Jack Davis for Playboy. Comics: George Lichty Grin And Bear It Orgy! ![]() Archive supporter Christopher Lopez saw our feature on George Lichty a month or two back and decided to donate a big stack of vintage Grin And Bear It dalies and Sunday pages. I grew up with George Lichty's cartoons in the funnies every day, and as a kid, I didn't give much thought to them. But seeing his work from a wide range of years is a revelation. At first glance, Lichty's drawings appear sloppy, with formulaic oafish characters with their jaws agape. But look closer... His compositional sense and skill at putting across a visual gag is remarkable. There's nothing sloppy about his use of perspective either! Cartooning: Byrnes' Complete Guide To Cartooning Part Six- Magazine Cartoons ![]() We continue our series of posts on Gene Byrnes' Complete Guide To Cartooning with the first part of the section dealing with magazine cartooning. Featured are Perry Barlow from The New Yorker, "girl specialist" Earl Oliver Hurst and Kurt Stoessel, among others. History: Terrytoons Studio Tour 1939 ![]() Wouldn't it be great to go back in time and see what a studio from the golden age of animation looks like? Well thanks to the family of legendary animator, Carlo Vinci you can. This rare home movie shows the entire production process of a Terrytoon cartoon. Comics: Chic Young's Blondie ![]() Chic Young was one of the most successful newspaper cartoonists of his time. His first syndicated strip, Dumb Dora ran from 1924 to 1930. He retired the strip to create a "pretty girl" comic (ala Polly & her Pals) titled Blondie. It was an instant hit. Young penned Blondie until his death in 1973. The strip is still in print, under the byline of his son, Dean. Here are some of the very earliest Blondie Sunday pages...
