Re: Online Drawing Lessons

Recently, John Kricfalusi decided to make his blog available to be viewed by invitation only. I am working with John to make the lesson posts from his blog available to students who want to work from his articles. It will take a few days to work out the details, so please be patient.

Thanks

Oh, thank you kind sir. We need all of the lesson-related posts from John's blog. If he would be so kind as to make ALL OF THEM available then that would be just wonderful.
Some of us were just beginning (or preparing to begin, like me) the lessons. And some might have been right in the middle! So THANK YOU SO MUCH!! TELL JOHN HOW MUCH IT MEANS

I've learned tons from John's posts, i tried to access his blog yesterday like every day and found out that you needed an invitation. I thought it was some sort of mistake but now i see its intentional. Why would you make it invitation only? One of the things i liked most about it was that John just shared all this knowledge with everyone that wanted it, something very hard to find in the artistic world. I know he must have his reasons to go private but im super bummed out right now

Thanks, its really a shame that a few bad apples have to ruin things for everyone else

noooooooooooooo.....!!

I've been reading John's blog for a long time... and its quite difficult to accept we won't be reading him anymore.

Is it even possible to get an invitation?

It's really disappointing. I assume this has to do with the post he made the other day about comments getting out of control.

I'd much prefer he bring it back and simply disallow commenting.

I read it daily for quite a long time and I think I posted a total of 1 comment.

I got a bad feeling in my stomach for a moment since his blog is gold. Ive been reading it daily for a while as well and his lessons have had an immense influence in my knowledge of animation. I know he has two blogs; the second is specifically for students which is invite only as well. Is he meshing the two again or is he keeping them separate? Can we still try for an invite to the lesson blog, and if so where should we post the links for our studies (to see if John accepts us or not)? Hope all gets sorted soon- thanks much to John for sharing his blogs freely for as long as he did. -Alex

Also interested! I'd only recently started reading more regularly and was doing some of the lessons and felt a tad rejected that John had suddenly locked people out : (. I'm eager to learn but I dont have the time to constantly sketch and work as I have Uni too...

John, you are a great person, an awesome animator, and a visionary. Never mind the playa haters.

Thanks, Steven!
I'm definitely interested in whatever both you and John have to share about animation. It's a darn shame this had to happen since I had just discovered his blog a short while ago. Already, he's taught me so much!
Anyhoo, I hope all becomes peaceful and we can set aside the squabble to get back to what's really important here... At least for supporters, fans, and those wanting to learn :)

Well, this really sucks. The internet just got 90% more bland, lifeless and dull. All because one or two know-nothing narcissists can't stand it when someone actually does something worthwhile, and has a hard-earned opinion to go with it.

I'd love an invitation, but i'm 32 and no longer a student. So I'm pretty sure that eliminates me from consideration. All the same, I was learning alot from John and enjoyed and appreciated his blog more than any other I read.

John K's blog means an awful lot to me - I'm very grateful for all he's taught me. It's really a shame that it's been closed off - it's been on my mind non-stop since I tried to read it yesterday. It's pretty disappointing.
I wonder if there's a way to limit comments to his invited students in the cartoon college only so that all of these losers who want to say hateful stuff won't waste everybody's time.

Asking me to be patient is like asking dead dogs to play fetch, it can't be done. I actually need this invitation cause I got nothing really productive to do but read!

Thank you both. Much appreciated!

John's blog was very informative and was a big help in my self study of animation. I hope he will open it up again.

It was a bit of a shock to discover the blog was not accessible anymore apart from invited people...it is such a pity, I really hope John will change his mind and made the blog accessible to everybody again...

i've actually been keeping his post with what sorts of stuff to present to him to get into the cartoon college blog until i get my freelance done and i saw it had be come private!

thanks for this post i was a bit confused.

i'd really like to get involved, i'll keep watching here to see if there's any update on how!

Oh well, there goes the blog that was gonna save cartoons.

That's really disappointing as John K's energy, enthusiasm and know-how were a real creative motivator for my own efforts. And I wanted to help save cartoons too!

Let's hope something can be worked out.

Wow, that's really generous. I am a student, and love learning from John's daily blog. Everything he had going on was so interesting from the film critiques, to the various types of how to's and the other cartoonist's style comparisons.

It'd be great to be considered for an invitation.

Otherwise, I have already learned alot and been inspired through the roof. Tell John thank you. :)

Never been so disappointed at not being able to read a blog anymore.

It's was a real bummer to know that John's blog isn't where for me anymore. Man, that was like a goldmine for a cartoonist. I wish I had made a backup of his blog...

At 9:16 AM, Blogger Gabriel said...

That's awful, his blog has always been a great read. There's just no one else out there doing what he did. Sure, other folks post nice material, but it was not only about lessons and resources. His comments on old and new animation have always been very insightful. Unfortunately keeping things real also means pissing a lot of people off, and i guess the backlash eventually got too much. No wonder no one else follow his footsteps. No one wants to say the rat from ratatouille is ugly as hell and face the lynching mob...

As glad as I am to still have access to his lessons, it makes me sad that this likely means his blog is gone for good. If his lessons include more than the Preston Blair book, perhaps they can be organized on this new site (color, storyboards, inking, etc). While I sure wish he would reconsider, I respect his decision and hope we can all continue to learn.

Thank you, Ken Coleman

This is good news. It is perfectly understandable if John decided to stop blogging, whether temporarily or from here on out, but to think that all his valuable insights, theories, and lessons are just no longer available seems pretty devastating. I hope something can be worked out to keep an archive of his lesson posts here.

Thank you for looking into this Stephen.

Yeah, I'm definitely glad that it'll still be continuing in some way - I've been working through the lessons, but like some of you guys, I've been waiting to post my stuff online.

If you're starting any type of waiting list, sign me up!

Thanks, Stephen.

I just started working through the lessons a month or so ago. In fact, I was just about to post a link to one of my lessons when I saw that I didn't have access to John's blog any more. Really bummed.

Preston Blair lessons aside, JohnK's blog was a huge inspiration and has shaped my learning tremendously. If it's closed for good, this is really the end of an era. If there's any way to get an invite, I'd love to know how.

Thanks for all your efforts, and please thank John for all the invaluable blog posts.

What a major disappointment. But I understand that it's his blog and he has every right to make it private if he wants. I've been reading it since the beginning, and John has never failed to entertain, inspire and thought-provoke.

I hope he reverses his decision, but even if he doesn't, I still appreciate the fact that he shared some of his wisdom with us over the last three years.

That's great news, I'm glad its not gone forever :) But even if I never saw it again I've already learned so much I'm completely in debt to him. I'd be honored if I was considered to get an invitation. I'll keep doing the studies anyway though, it's already brought me great improvement from before.

Thank you Stephen and John!

(sorry if this is sent twice, I sent a comment last night but then blogger went offline)

I'm really disappointed that I don't have access to John K's blog anymore. It's been a huge influence on me in a thousand ways. As people have said, limiting comments seems like the right way to do things, but ):

Anyway, if you see this, John, thank you so much for having had such an amazing blog.

Thank you so much! And thank you John for helping other artists and spending the time you did on the blog. It will be hard for other teachers to take over in your place.
John's insight on cartoons or whatever he felt like discussing always made me feel great to start my mornings. His blog and other artists are part of my morning ritual, they would also make me sad if they went away.I kind of want to cry, I'm that upset about it.

When I first found John's blog I was skeptical about his views, I admit. I kept reading because I never seen an argument about cartoons that was so vastly different from what I use too. I am so glad I kept reading, I realized how much I didn't know. I am really thankful for him opening up my mind to another side of an argument I didn't even know existed.

But thank goodness we still have ASIFA and Uncle Eddie and all the other wonderful artist blogs that also share their insight.

I also hope his previous posts will be put back as an archive..he can turn off comments..

we could then reread them..
please put the previous posts back online..

also gutted and hope John changes his mind...

I also read JohnK's blog almost daily.

I'm disappointed that I won't have access to it anymore but would like to thank John for making it available in the first place.

How does one get an invite anyway?

Great. I'm gonna keep working hard to get the first ten lessons done. Hopefully then I can get into on or both of the blogs.

Even if I can't it's still worth doing. :)
