Feedback: Zim Course

For the past several months, I have been carefully digitizing the Zim Course in Cartooning, Comic Art and Caricature. This is the granddaddy of all cartooning correspondence courses. If you aren't familiar with it, see our posting on the subject from last May.

The course consists of 20 books of 32 pages each. There are hundreds and hundreds of cartoons and illustrations, along with precious nuggets of homespun philosophy from the father of modern caricature, Eugene "Zim" Zimmerman. The course was available directly from Zim himself by mail, beginning in 1914. It's unclear how many people took the course over the next decade or so, but complete copies of this course are extremely rare. ASIFA-Hollywood was fortunate enough to be allowed to digitize Ralph Bakshi's personal copy.

I am going to be republishing this course, and I would like to get feedback from those of you who might be interested in purchasing it on what format would be most convenient for you. Proceeds from the sale of these books will be going to expand our operations at the archive.

Thanks!

Hey Stephen,
I've donated a little in the past but have yet to post to say how much I love this site. I LOVE THIS SITE!
And seeing this post makes me appreciate it even more.
I'm eager to get my hands on these books and think it's hardcover all the way if there's enough people behind it. When would they be available?
Cheers!
Hi Steve.
I really couldn't afford the whole set at the same time for $125. I just don't have the dough.
Any chance you could break it up into smaller chunks, like you did for the first four? Then for sure I'll buy 'em.
The hardback book sounds great, though. If I have the money, I'll definitely buy that.
Sorry I haven't donated lately, I'm pretty tight on cash. Soon as I have it, I'll throw some your way.
Thanks for all the great stuff, Mr. Worth! We're all in debt to you!

Hi Stephen,
I'd say e-book format would be good. It would cost less to produce and less to purchase, AND we could get our grubby little hands on them sooner because we wouldn't have to wait for them to come back from the printers :-D
Thanks!
Gene
Hi Mr. Worth
It's my first time commenting here, so I must give a huge thanks for everything you're doing for the Animation Archive.
As much as I'd love to buy this cartooning course, I'm afraid money's really bad for me since I'm jobless - but the second I do find a job and have enough money saved, I will definitely buy a copy. I just don't know how long it'll be until I get hired somewhere.
With that said, I have to ask, how long will you be selling this on the site?
Also, I really like the idea of the books on CD-rom, so I vote for that option
I think putting it on a CD would be best. Nobody likes working from a computer screen, but if there is a page one wants to work from it can easily be printed out.

Hi Stephen...I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this treasure! I've really enjoyed the PDF's that you published for the previous fundraising drive, so CD (or DVD-rom) copies would be my choice. That will give anybody the flexibility to print out any pages they want.
Thanks for asking! --sherm
This sounds like a VERY interesting set - however, a $125 pricetag seems too high for those of us who are not already rabid fans of Zim...I would think that splitting them up into more easily affordable volumes would give us casually interested fans the chance to BECOME rabid fans, and then buy the other volumes. And myself, I prefer actual paper over digital format. I look forward to seeing more of this/like this - THANKS!
