Comics: Jack Kirby In Not Brand Echh Number 1

This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see reason number 2 on our The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for links to more great posts about print cartoonists.

Jack Kirby Marvel Not Brand Echh
Archive supporter, Kevin O'Neil spotted our feature on Jack Davis' work for Mad magazine earlier this week. It reminded him of some treasures in his own stash of comics. So he came down to the archive and lent us his collection to digitize. Thanks, Kevin!

Current superhero comics (now referred to self-importantly as "graphic novels") take themselves VERY seriously. It's rare for a publisher to allow a parody of its own characters... and unheard of for the creator himself to get the opportunity to make fun of his own creation. But back in the silver age of comics, cartoonists didn't take themselves quite so seriously. Here we have the unthinkable... Jack Kirby and Stan Lee doing a parody of their own Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comics for Marvel's Not Brand Echh!

Jack Kirby Marvel Not Brand Echh
Not Brand Echh was a short-lived humor comic line from Marvel that parodied superhero comics. The title was derived from the term of derision used in the letters section of Marvel comics to describe competing comic book companies... "Brand Echh" was a riff on TV commercials that compared products to their competitor, "Brand X". The series ran for 13 issues from August of 1967 to May of 1969, and featured art by Bill Everett (see our recent post on Bob's Big Boy), Roy Thomas and John and Marie Severin.

Here we have a story from the premiere issue of Not Brand Echh titled, "The Silver Burper". The plot was loosely based on the story of Fantastic Four #57 through #60... It was written by Stan Lee and drawn by the great Jack Kirby. (Inking by Frank Giacoia and lettering by Artie Simek.)

These comics were printed a couple of years before I was born, but I did get a few of the later "Giant" in a trade with one of the older kids in the neighborhood and I fell in love with them ever since.

Just a few notes of trivia, the character everyone is afraid of on the cover of #1 is "The Amazing Forbush Man", who became the staple throughout the rest of the series, the Marvel Bullpen, a 2 page spread regular in "Marvel Age", and took the reigns again in the late 80's when the comic was resurrected as "What The..?!", which was a take of the "What If...?" comic series.

Also, several of the stories from "Not Brand Ecch" were reprinted several years later in "Crazy", which was Marvel's answer to Mad Magazine.

Are you guys missing any of the not brands? I have 5 or so more. And a few 60s Mads. Did you get the big Don Martin collection to scan? Are you looking for the Mad paperbacks?

Maaaaaaaaaaan! Hard to believe this is Kirby on art. yes! post more! Marie Severin was a master, a precursor to comics being drawn more like cartoons, like Bruce Timm and Tim Sale.

Please post "Spidey-Man vs. Gnat Man and Rotten". Marie Severin was amazing. When I was 13 years old and obsessed with comic books, especially Marvel, I sent some unsolicited samples and received not only some full page copies of pencil art, but a phone call from Marie herself. She was very kind, helpful, nurturing and encouraging the whole time. Marie was an incredible ambassador to her industry.

Man, that's some great Kirby humor art there. Was there nothing he couldn't do? Well, OK, dialogue. But artwise, I don't think so!

I'd be willing to bet that Marie Severin inked some of this story, especially when you look at some of the faces...

NBE was one of my favorite comics when I was a kid...

I've always thought that Marie Severin stepped in to at least rough out this story. It's just too good! (Nothing against Jack who I love, but I just can't believe him getting this wild, even with Frank Giacoia's cleaning up.)

Not Brand Echh is totally under rated.

The origin of the Fantastical Four was hilarious and a bit racy at times. Shrew(?) Storm chiding Weed Wichards with "Oh Weedie Sweetie, it was so silly of you to have only three chairs" on their moon rocket. Weed, enjoying her curvy form seated on his lap, replies, "Yes, heh heh, wasn't it?", a lascivious grin on his face.
