Pinups: John Held Jr.

This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see reason number 9 on our The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for links to more great pinup art.

John Held JrJohn Held JrToday, Archive volunteer, Gary Francis brought in a couple of Playboys from the late 60s to add to our collection of digitized images by Sokol, Dedini, Interlandi, Sneyd and Vargas. We will be posting more by these great artists soon, but I particularly wanted to bring this great feature on John Held Jr. to your attention.

John Held Jr was born in 1889, and by the age of 16 was an accomplished sports cartoonist for the Salt Lake City Tribune. He served in the military during WWI, and soon after his return he gained fame for his work as an illustrator for Life, Judge and College Humor. His style and subject matter defined the "Jazz Age" of the 1920s. His cartoons depicting sexy flappers and their raccoon coated beaus living the life of flaming youth were all the rage. In later years, he worked in woodcuts and illustrated scenes from the "Gay Nineties"

Here is a feature on Held from the January 1966 issue of Playboy magazine...

I just added the last page of this article, which includes some great biographical info on Held. (A nice Virgil Partch comic too!) If you would like to see more of Held's work, visit Shane Glines' excellent site... CartonRetro.com.

If you find this posting to be useful, you should also see our postings on George Petty's Ridgid Tools Calendars, Erich Sokol, Eldon Dedini, Doug Sneyd and Phil Interlandi.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Gary.

you're very welcome, steve. i'm always more than happy to donate time and artwork to the archive. (turns to throngs of internet folk). i strongly encourage everyone to come visit the archive. i am astounded every day by the sheer amount of cartoon goodness paraded in front of me every time i visit. i tell you, if you're a big fan of real cartoons like me, there's no better place in the world to root around in cartoon bliss. i personally have learned so much just from talking to steve, watching old cartoons, reading storyboards, simply immersing myself in everything the archive has to offer. it's a great priviledge, and there's no way i'd ever take it for granted.

one can be disillusioned after a subpar art school experience, but john and steve revved up the $100k art course, and it got me motivated to really commit myself to being the best cartoonist i can. here was all the dirt on how to draw cartoons, the way i always wanted to draw them, in a very specific, intuitive fashion. all the stuff i wished art school would have taught me, and holy hell, it's free. these guys are my heroes!
the blair lessons, and john's comprehensive instruction really turned things around for me, and made a big difference in my life. i've conditioned myself to improving my drawings every day, since starting the lessons. if not, i feel like a rickety, pus-laden shell of a man. are you going to waste your days getting cobweb crotch playing xbox on your sofa, or are you going to grab that gusto and help save animation? it's an honorable quest, and i think the national youth should know you don't have to be saddled by mediocrity, it's up to this current generation to make a change. the archive is there to help you learn from all the great artists of the past, and give you the knowledge to turn things around again. don't pass that up.

this got all infomercial styled, and i spewed a lot out, but it needs to be repeated until it hits home. do yourself a HUGE favor and come visit and study at the archive. atta boy.... there ya go, you're doing it! c-ya.
