Blogcast: A Quick Tour Of The Archive

Today, I pulled out my trusty MacBook and decided to shoot a quick video to show you what the archive offices look like. You'll have to forgive the shaky camera, my unshaven mug and our off the cuff remarks... We did this very quickly.

A lot of people are under the impression that the "archive" is this website. That isn't the case. We have a storefront in Burbank, CA that we work out of and it is open to the public. Click on my head to take a look at this (sloppy!) video to see what we're up to...

The archive...just how I remember it. God, I miss it. I'm surprised you didn't show the physical archives.

The Archives is such a wonderful place and I have always wanted to visit, but unfortunately I live on the East Coast. What are your plans, if any, to make the Archives accessable for those who can't physically be there to use it?

You are obviously digitizing everything, so why can't this information be stored on a server that is accessable over the internet?

Thank you.

Thanks, Steve, for showing us a tiny part of the work you're doing over at the ASIFA Archives - and thanks to Jemma, Marc and Antran, too.

(I heard some self-important jackass stupidly referred to it as a "rat's nest" on his vanity plate of a website, recently.

This jerk seems to be obsessed with you. His recent rants fairly reek with envy and infantile spite - to the point where his obscure site has become an embarrassment. Some people just love to demonstrate their ignorance, I guess.

Sorry, I can't think of his name, but it's irrelevant. He's so far beneath notice that it hardly matters, anyway.)

Keep up the good work!

Our plans for the future include syndicating the archive to workstations maintained by ASIFA chapters all over the world, as well as university libraries and animation studios. That's going to take considerably more funding than we have right now though.

Our collection already measures in the terabytes, and it's growing day by day. If we put it all up on the internet, we'd never be able to afford the bandwidth to serve it all. But we will keep posting day by day samples of what we are digitizing. If there is anything that you are particularly interested in, comment on it and request a follow up post.

Thanks
Steve

Awesome work. I'd love to visit if I'm ever on that coast. I'd love to see more video of the work. First we'd have to get you a camera that actually lets you see what you're recording.

Why don't you upload the video to YouTube and embed the player in the post? It would save you a ton on site bandwidth and would be more convenient for visitors (Faster).

Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

I could do that with this video since there are no copyright issues involved. But for our animated clips, fair use requires that the videos not be hosted on third party sites. Hopefully, everyone will go to the trouble of downloading and installing the latest version of Quicktime so they can see all the videos on the Archive blog.

Thanks
Steve
