Media: 50s and 60s Album Covers
This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see reason number 3 on our The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for links to more great posts about 50s children's book illustrators.

Archive volunteer and resident video guru, Eric Graf has amassed an amazing collection of novelty and children's records from the 50s and 60s. He brought a stack by the other day to be scanned. Check out how these covers make you want to rush to your phonograph to play the record. Tiny, badly designed CD and DVD covers just don't have the same impact. Thanks, Eric for sharing these with us!

WOWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! the 2 Sleeping Beauties & Pinnochio are awesome!!
Thanks Eric!
That "Let's All Sing With The Chipmunks" cover with the red background is great! In a just world, all cartoon characters would have radically different designs on their album covers....
That Alvin & the Chipmunks with the realistic chipmunks is awesome.

Here are some albums I just happen to have on my server.
I bought them at a Salvation army based solely on the cover art!
When's the last time you said that about a CD?
(sorry for the poor photos - I didn't have a scanner back then)
Sing Along
Big Band
Cats and Dogs
Cats and Dogs 2
The Pinocchio and the first Sleeping Beauty are in the "WDL-4000" series of Disneyland Records from the 50s. They were premium-priced, audiophile-quality albums with magnificent cover-art, and they didn't sell worth a toot. Most are rare now, although you can find that Sleeping Beauty without TOO much trouble.
It's not obvious from the scans, but all the Chipmunks albums have foil covers -- they're shiny! And the original "Let's All Sing" is pressed on red vinyl. Liberty Records knew the value of spiffy packaging.
The early "photorealistic" pictures of the Chipmunks date back to before the series. They changed them all when the Alvin Show started.

You do that too, huh? I especially like your YPR album (the first one). YPR/CRG always had colorful, distinctive covers, and frequent performances by many of the great blacklisted folkies, often uncredited. The John Birchers were convinced that the label was a Communist front to indoctrinate America's youth, though there's not much evidence of it on the records.

Wow Man...
I can't believe that I had so many of these albums when i was a kid. "Jazz for Kids.." Wow.
Thanks for the post
I got almost all of these given to me just the other day by a guy who was closing down is second-hand shop. At least Small World, Saludos, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, and Dumbo. Not in playable condition, but still...
Not just "Jazz For Kids" but "Jazz For Kids" as filtered through CAPTAIN KANGAROO!
Hot cha! Swing, Mister Greenjeans, swing!
These are all great, but I especially liked the "Child's Introduction to Jazz" cover -- love that design! I wish I knew who the artist was (on all of them, but that one in particular).
Thanks for posting these!
I just found this post today. Here's my Children's records Blog that has a lot of cover scans you might be interested in:
