John Kricfalusi hosted a fundraising event for the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive at Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks on August 10th. He screened rare cartoons and talked about "When Cartoons Were Cartoony". If you missed it, you missed out on one of the best ASIFA events of the year.
The program opened with some wonderfully cartoony cartoons by Lantz animator, Bill Nolan. Of these cartoons, Eddie Fitzgerald commented, "The Oswald cartoons were a revelation. They're not just typical black and whites of the period, they're very skillfull examples of cartoons that manage to be funny without plot. I don't blame people who may be skeptical about this, it flies in the face of what we've been taught for 50 years, but the proof is in the films." As John's program continued, it traced the history of cartooniness in animation through Grim Natwick at Fleischer and Bob Clampett at Warners, all the way to Ed Benedict's UPA style cartoons for Tex Avery at MGM. It was an eye-opening program with excellent commentary that really showed the progression and growth.
After the screening, there was a brief question and answer period with John K, storyman Eddie Fitzgerald and the legendary voice actor, Gary Owens. When the program was over, John K, Gary Owens, and Eddie Fitzgerald were joined at the signing table by the brilliant caricaturist, Marlo Meekins, who blew the crowd away by drawing caricatures of every brave soul with the self confidence to sit for her!
Response to this event was so good, Van Eaton plans a follow up in the near future. Keep an eye on this blog for the announcement of the date and time.
Many thanks to John, Gary, Eddie, Marlo, the Van Eaton Galleries and everyone who attended for making this such a successful fundraiser.
