Filmography: Catnip Capers 1940
This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see reason number 7 on our The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for links to more great cartoons to study.

Today, we digitized a batch of Terrytoons from the 3/4 inch masters donated to us by John Kricfalusi. Among them was a real gem... Catnip Capers (1940).

This cartoon is among the best cartoons TerryToons ever produced, and for my money, one of the best cartoons ever. It starts out like a typical Terry cat and mouse cartoon, but before long, it's gone off on a wild tangent into feline surrealism and exotica.

The backgrounds in this cartoons are spectacular. If anyone out there knows who laid out or painted these, please post to the comments below. There are times where backgrounds and layout are equal in importance to the animation of the characters... a couple of good examples would be the end of Tex Avery's "King Size Canary" and the St. James Infirmary Blues sequence of "Betty Boop in Snow White". This cartoon certainly fits in that category as well.

Terrytoons have been ufairly criticized as being "flaccid", "predictable" and "boring" in just about every animation history book that references them. The ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive has made it a goal to collect and make available as much of the output of the studio as possible to put the lie to those mischaracterizations.

who the hell writes animation history books? almost everyone i know gets excited for the crazy terrytoons movements expressions and everything
All right! Thanks to John K, Stepehen W et al for sharing this. Gotta love those Carlo V harem dance numbers. (that was Carlo's animation, right?)
I seem to remember a later Li'l Roquefort cartoon where Percy got into the ol' catnip pretty heavy. The tripped out cat segements were done by Jim Tyer, IIRC.
Marvelous - thanks, again!
I love terry toons. They never seem to grow old or outdated. I am 86 and remember them on the big screen. charlie
I just happened onto a collection of Terry Toons. My Mom loves old cartoons, so she bought one of those DVD sets with random cartoons on them. Over 70% are Terry Toons, and they are great. Some of the most demented humor I've seen from the day. She wont let me barrow them, so I might have to steal it. :) Great stuff and Thanks to John and stephen for everything.

Thanks for the Terrytoon! Those harem cat dancers were "recycled" into at least one more cartoon starring Sourpuss and Gandy. The combination of cute cat vs cute mice also pops up in the Terrytoon with "Uncle Joey"(a caricature of "Big Mouth" Joe Brown).
I remember the Lil Roquefort cartoon where the idea of a catnip "high" is used, with outrageous animation by Tyer.Even Percy's voice is changed by the power of the 'nip!
Those harem dance numbers might have been done by Connie Rasinski, who was often given dancing stuff. Plenty of it got re-used in later Terrytoons.
"Catnip. I wonder what that is"
I remember this cartoon being on TV when I was a kid, but naturally it had been pulled from the air around the time of the "Mighty Mouse is a coke fiend" news
