Media: Grim Natwick's Post UPA Commercials

This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see the bonus reason on our The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for links to more great posts featuring animation art.

Grim Natwick CommercialsGrim Natwick CommercialsGrim Natwick was a remarkable man. It's mind-blowing to realize that the same man who animated Mariutch and Swing, You Sinners in 1930 animated Sonny the Coo Coo Bird three decades later! These drawings are from Grim's estate, and they cover his years in New York in the late 1950s and early 60s. These sketches are the work of Tissa David working from Grim's rough poses. If you know anything about these spots, please post it in the comments section below.

Great Natwick stuff.

Other than having one of the coolest names of all time, his caricature style rules.

I spoke with Tissa David. These are probably all her clean-ups. She wasn't sure of the wolf (though I am) and the kid with the Ice Cream.
She remembered the Holsum Bread spot for Robert Lawrence Prods. and the Coco Puffs bird for Ray Favata.
The writing on the fox & cow is Grim's (clean-up Tissa's) all other writing is Tissa's.

One thing I am sure of about that wolf drawing : it's from UPA's Peter Cottontail TV cartoon made for the Hill & Range's song. Beginning of the 50's. Two were made at UPA : Frosty the Snowman, clearly directed by Bobe Cannon, and that Peter Cottontail cartoon, which I am happy, by now, to put at least a name on it : Natwick ! (Peter Cottontail was written by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins in 1949). Long before Mel-o-Toons, there was Frosty the Snowman & Peter Cottontail...
