Media: John K's Storyboard For Stimpy's Invention
In his blog, All Kinds Of Stuff, John Kricfalusi has been discussing how he structures his stories. It's fascinating reading, you should definitely check it out.
John generously donated the archives of Spumco to the ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Archive last year. We're still in the process of cataloging the material, but I wanted to share a particularly important item with you today.
Here is an excerpt from the original storyboard to "Stimpy's Invention". The board is by Bob Camp; and the last panel, which is a xerox of a layout drawing is by Chris Reccardi. Take a moment and read John K's notes on how he constucts his stories... (Part One / Part Two / Part Three / Part Four and his post on Outlining Stories) and then take a look at how the theories are implemented in this section of board. I will be posting more from this sequence next week, so you can see how the excitement builds.

Wow. A classic R&S storyboard in the archive. The classic cartoon has come a long way. This is good stuff.
Great!!
Yeah, this is pretty much one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Holy crap, thanks for posting that!
Any change of this going on the Ultimate DVD set?
pleasure overload...
Whoa this is such great post! I'll definetly be checking in regularly to see how this progresses....

Happy happy, joy joy...er, I mean...a fine example of how cartoons in popular 1990's culture were created and executed.
(Note to self: YOU EEEDIOT!)
I must say, ever since I was a kid, (which wasn't too long ago!), I have loved Ren and Stimpy! Timeless characters..
Amazing! This cartoon sits prominently in my memory for two reasons: I almost literally busted a gut laughing when Stimpy reaches up off-frame and pulls down the Jigsaw Beaver while working on the Happy Helmet, and the later scene where Ren starts laughing hysterically quite disturbed me.
Thanks for posting this!
Brilliant. I'm so glad you posted this. The idea was just as hilarious in storyboard form.
Thanks a lot for posting all this AMAZING stuff for us Steve!
THANKS A LOT.... really:D!!!!!
I really love Bob Camp's drawing style. Really inspiring. Thanks for posting these!
How utterly perverse these characters are. It is a depiction of sheer genius, every expression is about as stuffed with character as it can be, I LOVE IT! Mick http://rockwatching.wordpress.com
It still rocks. You sick little monkeys!
Excellent to see the artistry behind a show that is influential as Ren and Stimpy.
Really inspiration for budding filmmakers, artists, and fans alike.
