Filmography: Coal Black And De Sebben Dwarfs

I received an email asking how good the image quality was in the archive's copy of Coal Black And De Sebben Dwarfs. Here are a few frame grabs...

This film was sourced from a first generation 3/4 inch master donated by John Kricfalusi. John also donated broadcast quality copies of Tin Pan Alley Cats, Hittin' The Trail For Hallelujah Land, Goldilocks and The Jivin' Bears and hundreds of other titles. Although these particular films may not be suitable for syndication as entertainment for children, they contain some of the greatest animation ever done by animators like Rod Scribner and Robert McKimson. They are available for viewing in the archive on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 1pm and 9pm.

That's great that John K had 3/4 inch master tapes to donate, but what about the original 35mm Technicolor prints ? Is Warners (or Ted Turner or whomever...) just sitting on those prints and not making them available to anyone ? If they're never going to release them again then it seems like they might want to donate the original negs to ASIFA , in my opinion.

The only place I've ever seen Coal Black on the "big screen" was at Reg Hartt's in the early 80's and then when I worked at Atkinson Film Arts in Ottawa a group of us wet-behind-the-ears just-out-of-Sheridan College animators had a 16mm print of it that was transferred onto VHS (along with some other rare stuff like Disney's Education for Death) .

Wow, I know you said broadcast quality but it's still surprising to see it. I'll be in next week to watch it 30 times!

Those screen grabs are gorgeous! I have an absolutely terrible, pink, and contrasty nth-generation video copy of the film and constantly show it to folks. If only WB would release this on one of their Golden Collections. With the Whoopee intros on the current set, perhaps they're considering it for a later set. Doubt it, but one can always hope.

Holy crap, that's a bazillion times better than the copy I watched!

...but I live in the UK :(

Why not have it online? I'll pay! :( :( :(
